Secrets for successful ageing

Since November is a great month to honour people, I thought I would write today’s piece about an incredible member of our practice. With Veterans Week and Remembrance Day looming, it just seems fitting. Especially since he is a WWII vet.

Clement Kromhoff is easily the most interesting person I have ever met. At 92 years old, he is full of stories, amazing thoughts about health and a life well lived and he always has something kind to say to the people around him. Oh, and he’s also hilarious; everyone in his immediate proximity seems to be smiling. He speaks several languages, drove the Model T Ford and loves to share the great produce that he grows in his backyard.

Many people will be awed just by his age, and the fact that he is not only in his nineties, but he is there in great health is even more inspiring. He lives alone, still drives and still works in his garden. To some that will sound unbelievable, but the truth is we should all be living as well and as long as Clem.

Those fruits, vegetables, herbs and seasonings that he grows with his own two hands are his secret to success. Clem will tell you that sugar is “white death” and that he never uses the stuff and that if the rest of the country didn’t consume so much of it we would be living longer and healthier lives. He controls the quality of what he puts in his body by growing it himself, and has done so for a great deal of his life. Of course there was the period of time that he was stationed overseas in WWII, where immense stress, less than ideal food, and I’m sure poor sleep would have taken a few years off his life, but he seems to have bounced back and found balance. He gave up alcohol, formed a relationship with God, and pursued his passions.

Clem was married to the love of his life for nearly 70 years, and has formed a strong support system of neighbours, friends, and even acupuncturists and chiropractors around him. When he recently fell from a ladder in his yard there were people there to pick him up, dust him off and make sure that he was on the road to recovery. You can’t help but love this man, and I think the lessons we can all learn here are obvious, but I’m going to outline them for you anyway.

Secrets for successful ageing 1 – preserve your body with healthful food, light to moderate exercise and limit sugar! 2 – keep your mind fit by staying engaged in the world, learn a new language, go out and meet people. 3 – build a strong support system! Sometimes all you need is a hand to hold, or someone to listen to your problem or someone to celebrate a victory with. Cast a wide social net and you’ll always be able to find someone to help you. 4 – Pursue your passions, a life without purpose is not a life worth living. Find the things that inspire you, that stir your creativity or your give you that excited butterflies in the belly sensation. In the pursuit of something you love, nothing feels like work, and time flies. You’ll be 99 years old before you know it.

November is a time for reflection

It’s the month we use to honour our veterans, to think about their sacrifice for our health and livelihood. It’s also a great month to use for pausing to think about the mania that is Christmas that is fast approaching. November is a great time to take stock, be greatful and prepare yourself for upcoming challenges. So remember to pause.

This month @ Health In Hand
Inside the office you may have noticed our new tree on the wall. Its purpose is to be a family tree of sorts and we would love to hang pictures of our chiropractic family on there. We have been slowly taking pictures of the children in our practice and we would love to have a photo of your well adjusted child, so remind us when you’re in the office with them to take one, or bring a copy of one of your old favourites in! For those of you who have been coming in without having your children checked, let the family tree remind you that we’re a family wellness office, and we want to make sure that ALL members of your family are subluxation-free.

Wellness Orientations
We’re happy to report that Wellness Orientations have been very well attended in the last month or so, and if you haven’t been to one yet, it’s a great opportunity to learn some vital information. Some of it you will already know, but a lot of the time we need to be reminded. The rest will help you to understand what your chiropractor is doing for you, what you can do at home to help yourself and why you need to come in so darn often in the beginning. The Orientations are scheduled for Monday evenings at 6:15pm and all are welcome, even if you’ve been to one before, or you have never stepped foot in our office, but want to find out more. Just give us a call and let us know you’re coming so we can save you a spot.

What does a chiropractor do in Kelowna?

What does a chiropractor do?

When you hear the word chiropractor you might immediately think of the word “quack”. There is a great deal of disagreement about the effectiveness of chiropractors and what they can and can’t do to help improve your health. Chiropractors are most commonly associated with relieving back pain. Some chiropractors may claim to be able to improve other health conditions such as asthma, chronic ear infections, and a myriad of other common medical conditions. You probably either love chiropractors or think that they use their techniques to keep reeling patients back into their office for repeated treatments. There may be truth to both of these schools of thought.

There is great evidence that chiropractors can help improve back pain and other musculoskeletal problems by realigning the vertebrae of the patient’s spine. A chiropractor can manipulate vertebrae and cause them to move back into place. Repeated manipulations may be necessary because the vertebrae want to slip back into their old positions. A good chiropractor will use his hands to manipulate the vertebrae back into alignment. Some chiropractors use mechanical devices or small hammer-like tools to tap vertebrae back into place.

Some chiropractors subscribe to the theory of subluxation. Subluxation theory supposes that the misalignment of vertebrae puts pressure on components of the nervous system that in turn causes all sorts of health problems within the body. These chiropractors will tell you that chiropractic care is a necessary part of your health and well being. If you visit a chiropractor that subscribes to subluxation theory you will most likely be put on a regimen of regular chiropractic care indefinitely. There has not been any significant scientific proof that chiropractic care provides any improvement in non-musculoskeletal problems but it may provide a strong placebo effect to patients who are suffering from them.

A chiropractor may often point to the ‘popping’ noise that occurs when he adjusts your vertebrae as evidence of misalignment. Chiropractors often use this sound to reinforce your belief that you need ongoing care. What many patients don’t know is that it is possible to make this ‘popping’ noise by manipulating normal aligned vertebrae.

Your first visit to a chiropractor can include any number of tests. A chiropractor will first ask you for your medical history and an indication of where you are experiencing pain. Some chiropractors will perform x-rays on your spine to check of misalignments and specific problems. Chiropractors who subscribe to the theory of subluxation may have special sensor scopes that they use on your spine to detect areas of warmth that would indicate restriction of nerves. Once your trouble areas are determined you may undergo a series of adjustments to your spine. Spinal adjustments are usually not painful.

You will probably be asked to return for a number of regular visits for continued manipulation. The chiropractor may take additional x-rays to determine the status of your condition. If you are visiting a chiropractor for pain in your back you should stop your treatment as soon as you are feeling better. Repeated chiropractic care has not been shown to be of benefit unless the patient is still having pain.

Many insurance companies are now covering chiropractic visits. Chiropractic care can be an effective tool for relieving back pain without medication just as physical and occupational therapy can be. Be wary of chiropractors that subscribe to the theory of subluxation and those that indicate the need for indefinite repeat visits. Check with your family doctor about the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments for conditions other than mechanical musculoskeletal pain

Packing your child’s backpack the right way

Back to school brings books, pencils, heavy bags and some dirty looks from your chiropractors if you’re putting undue stress and strain on the growing spine of your children. The body remembers! This point should be coming firmly into focus for most of our baby boomers.

The first thing you need to do is select a GREAT backpack. It should have lots of pockets and compartments to equally distribute weight, it should have padded shoulder straps and it should even have a waist belt to help take the load off when they need it the most.

Next, the bag needs to be worn properly. Every time I see a kid with the backpack on one shoulder, I think about the adults in my practice with one shoulder much higher than the other in the postural exam. Make sure they wear both shoulder straps and that the straps are tight enough that the bag rides above their bum. Loose straps put undue shoulder and rotational stress on their spines when they turn.

Next, children should not be carrying all their books and binders and lunch and everything else back and forth from home every day. If Johnny doesn’t have math every day he can leave his book at home, or in his locker on his days off. The weight of the bag should never exceed 15% of the child’s body weight. So if your child weighs 60 lbs, the bag should not weigh more than 9 lbs.

Now that you have the info, happy shopping for that perfect bag and the very light contents to fill it!

Declare your health freedom

I want you to read this article aloud. First and foremost because it is a declaration of your right to health and wellness, and secondly because you need to share it with the people around you. So shed your fears about being the crazy person who reads the paper aloud, and be a leader who helps guide our community to greatness.

Declaration #1 – My body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism. I know this because when I cut myself, my body jumps to action and creates a cascade of events that results in the healing of that cut. When I am too hot, my body regulates my temperature by sweating. I don’t have to think about making my heart beat once per second or breathing in and out. My body needs no outside help or interference to accomplish its tasks.

Declaration #2 – Every cell of my body is governed by a master control system and that system is my Central Nervous System consisting of my brain, spinal cord and nerves. I know this because I learned it in 5th grade biology, but also because when I have a thought to move my big toe, my brain sends the message down through my spinal cord and into my motor nerves that travel all the way down my leg and into my toe to create that movement.

Declaration #3 – Interference on my master control system (called subluxation) decreases my body’s ability to heal and regulate itself leading to illness and disease. I know this because if my brain were not able to communicate that message to my toe it would not be able to express the potential of my intention. The same is true for my brain communicating with my heart, my lungs, my immune system and every other function of my body.

Declaration #4 – Stress is the only reason I get interference on my nervous system and it can come in several forms: Physical (posture, trauma, sports injuries), Emotional (work, relationship, financial) and Chemical (processed food, medications, drugs and alcohol). No one is free of stress, so everyone is at risk for subluxation.

Declaration #4 – I have been brainwashed by big pharma and the sick care system who tell me that when I get sick it is because of a lack of medication in my body, or a surplus of internal organs.

Declaration #5 – I have seen the error in this thinking because I now realize that my first declaration was one of health and wellness completely independent of drugs and surgery.

Declaration #6 – Wellness is a process and every day I make decisions that either take me closer to illness and death and further from health and life, or closer to health and life and further from illness and death. If I am completely honest with myself and I continue to live life the way I am today, by this time next year will I be closer to life, or closer to death?

Declaration #7 – A chiropractor is the only professional trained and concerned with the detection and removal of subluxation on my nervous system, and since I cannot feel interference, but I am committed to my health and wellbeing, I get checked regularly by a chiropractor to make sure that my body is in the best shape possible to be able to heal and regulate itself.

This final declaration is for me, the author of this article and a community leader for true health and wellness. I am here to help you, to help this community. I have a vision for the Westside to be the healthiest community in Canada, that people from other communities will come here to see exactly what it is we’re doing to be so healthy and they will be so inspired that they take home all the lessons they’ve learned from us and help their community achieve the same success we’ve been able to create here. I can’t achieve my vision without you. You have to want it too. So if you want your children to live long healthy lives, be the change you want to see in them.

Yours in Great Health,
Dr. Sarah Tremblay and Dr. Travis Pillipow

Back to School

It’s getting to be that time of year when we all start thinking about getting back into a schedule and a routine.

The kids will be in school, our teachers and school support workers will be back to work, and the rest of us have that old feeling of summer coming to an end and the need to begin something new.

For us it’s a different workout routine, what is it for you?

If you’re not already getting adjusted, it’s a great way to add improved health, vitality and energy to your day!

This month @ Health In Hand

If you’ve been in the office you may have noticed that there’s been a shift in the attitude of the doctors and staff. Dr. Sarah and Dr. Travis were recently at a 5 day chiropractic retreat and they learned a lot of things about themselves, communication and using their NASA Certified technology to help you move forward on your road to wellness and to give even greater value for the services we’re already providing.
