Secrets for successful ageing

Since November is a great month to honour people, I thought I would write today’s piece about an incredible member of our practice. With Veterans Week and Remembrance Day looming, it just seems fitting. Especially since he is a WWII vet.

Clement Kromhoff is easily the most interesting person I have ever met. At 92 years old, he is full of stories, amazing thoughts about health and a life well lived and he always has something kind to say to the people around him. Oh, and he’s also hilarious; everyone in his immediate proximity seems to be smiling. He speaks several languages, drove the Model T Ford and loves to share the great produce that he grows in his backyard.

Many people will be awed just by his age, and the fact that he is not only in his nineties, but he is there in great health is even more inspiring. He lives alone, still drives and still works in his garden. To some that will sound unbelievable, but the truth is we should all be living as well and as long as Clem.

Those fruits, vegetables, herbs and seasonings that he grows with his own two hands are his secret to success. Clem will tell you that sugar is “white death” and that he never uses the stuff and that if the rest of the country didn’t consume so much of it we would be living longer and healthier lives. He controls the quality of what he puts in his body by growing it himself, and has done so for a great deal of his life. Of course there was the period of time that he was stationed overseas in WWII, where immense stress, less than ideal food, and I’m sure poor sleep would have taken a few years off his life, but he seems to have bounced back and found balance. He gave up alcohol, formed a relationship with God, and pursued his passions.

Clem was married to the love of his life for nearly 70 years, and has formed a strong support system of neighbours, friends, and even acupuncturists and chiropractors around him. When he recently fell from a ladder in his yard there were people there to pick him up, dust him off and make sure that he was on the road to recovery. You can’t help but love this man, and I think the lessons we can all learn here are obvious, but I’m going to outline them for you anyway.

Secrets for successful ageing 1 – preserve your body with healthful food, light to moderate exercise and limit sugar! 2 – keep your mind fit by staying engaged in the world, learn a new language, go out and meet people. 3 – build a strong support system! Sometimes all you need is a hand to hold, or someone to listen to your problem or someone to celebrate a victory with. Cast a wide social net and you’ll always be able to find someone to help you. 4 – Pursue your passions, a life without purpose is not a life worth living. Find the things that inspire you, that stir your creativity or your give you that excited butterflies in the belly sensation. In the pursuit of something you love, nothing feels like work, and time flies. You’ll be 99 years old before you know it.

November is a time for reflection

It’s the month we use to honour our veterans, to think about their sacrifice for our health and livelihood. It’s also a great month to use for pausing to think about the mania that is Christmas that is fast approaching. November is a great time to take stock, be greatful and prepare yourself for upcoming challenges. So remember to pause.

This month @ Health In Hand
Inside the office you may have noticed our new tree on the wall. Its purpose is to be a family tree of sorts and we would love to hang pictures of our chiropractic family on there. We have been slowly taking pictures of the children in our practice and we would love to have a photo of your well adjusted child, so remind us when you’re in the office with them to take one, or bring a copy of one of your old favourites in! For those of you who have been coming in without having your children checked, let the family tree remind you that we’re a family wellness office, and we want to make sure that ALL members of your family are subluxation-free.

Wellness Orientations
We’re happy to report that Wellness Orientations have been very well attended in the last month or so, and if you haven’t been to one yet, it’s a great opportunity to learn some vital information. Some of it you will already know, but a lot of the time we need to be reminded. The rest will help you to understand what your chiropractor is doing for you, what you can do at home to help yourself and why you need to come in so darn often in the beginning. The Orientations are scheduled for Monday evenings at 6:15pm and all are welcome, even if you’ve been to one before, or you have never stepped foot in our office, but want to find out more. Just give us a call and let us know you’re coming so we can save you a spot.

What does a chiropractor do in Kelowna?

What does a chiropractor do?

When you hear the word chiropractor you might immediately think of the word “quack”. There is a great deal of disagreement about the effectiveness of chiropractors and what they can and can’t do to help improve your health. Chiropractors are most commonly associated with relieving back pain. Some chiropractors may claim to be able to improve other health conditions such as asthma, chronic ear infections, and a myriad of other common medical conditions. You probably either love chiropractors or think that they use their techniques to keep reeling patients back into their office for repeated treatments. There may be truth to both of these schools of thought.

There is great evidence that chiropractors can help improve back pain and other musculoskeletal problems by realigning the vertebrae of the patient’s spine. A chiropractor can manipulate vertebrae and cause them to move back into place. Repeated manipulations may be necessary because the vertebrae want to slip back into their old positions. A good chiropractor will use his hands to manipulate the vertebrae back into alignment. Some chiropractors use mechanical devices or small hammer-like tools to tap vertebrae back into place.

Some chiropractors subscribe to the theory of subluxation. Subluxation theory supposes that the misalignment of vertebrae puts pressure on components of the nervous system that in turn causes all sorts of health problems within the body. These chiropractors will tell you that chiropractic care is a necessary part of your health and well being. If you visit a chiropractor that subscribes to subluxation theory you will most likely be put on a regimen of regular chiropractic care indefinitely. There has not been any significant scientific proof that chiropractic care provides any improvement in non-musculoskeletal problems but it may provide a strong placebo effect to patients who are suffering from them.

A chiropractor may often point to the ‘popping’ noise that occurs when he adjusts your vertebrae as evidence of misalignment. Chiropractors often use this sound to reinforce your belief that you need ongoing care. What many patients don’t know is that it is possible to make this ‘popping’ noise by manipulating normal aligned vertebrae.

Your first visit to a chiropractor can include any number of tests. A chiropractor will first ask you for your medical history and an indication of where you are experiencing pain. Some chiropractors will perform x-rays on your spine to check of misalignments and specific problems. Chiropractors who subscribe to the theory of subluxation may have special sensor scopes that they use on your spine to detect areas of warmth that would indicate restriction of nerves. Once your trouble areas are determined you may undergo a series of adjustments to your spine. Spinal adjustments are usually not painful.

You will probably be asked to return for a number of regular visits for continued manipulation. The chiropractor may take additional x-rays to determine the status of your condition. If you are visiting a chiropractor for pain in your back you should stop your treatment as soon as you are feeling better. Repeated chiropractic care has not been shown to be of benefit unless the patient is still having pain.

Many insurance companies are now covering chiropractic visits. Chiropractic care can be an effective tool for relieving back pain without medication just as physical and occupational therapy can be. Be wary of chiropractors that subscribe to the theory of subluxation and those that indicate the need for indefinite repeat visits. Check with your family doctor about the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments for conditions other than mechanical musculoskeletal pain

Packing your child’s backpack the right way

Back to school brings books, pencils, heavy bags and some dirty looks from your chiropractors if you’re putting undue stress and strain on the growing spine of your children. The body remembers! This point should be coming firmly into focus for most of our baby boomers.

The first thing you need to do is select a GREAT backpack. It should have lots of pockets and compartments to equally distribute weight, it should have padded shoulder straps and it should even have a waist belt to help take the load off when they need it the most.

Next, the bag needs to be worn properly. Every time I see a kid with the backpack on one shoulder, I think about the adults in my practice with one shoulder much higher than the other in the postural exam. Make sure they wear both shoulder straps and that the straps are tight enough that the bag rides above their bum. Loose straps put undue shoulder and rotational stress on their spines when they turn.

Next, children should not be carrying all their books and binders and lunch and everything else back and forth from home every day. If Johnny doesn’t have math every day he can leave his book at home, or in his locker on his days off. The weight of the bag should never exceed 15% of the child’s body weight. So if your child weighs 60 lbs, the bag should not weigh more than 9 lbs.

Now that you have the info, happy shopping for that perfect bag and the very light contents to fill it!

Declare your health freedom

I want you to read this article aloud. First and foremost because it is a declaration of your right to health and wellness, and secondly because you need to share it with the people around you. So shed your fears about being the crazy person who reads the paper aloud, and be a leader who helps guide our community to greatness.

Declaration #1 – My body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism. I know this because when I cut myself, my body jumps to action and creates a cascade of events that results in the healing of that cut. When I am too hot, my body regulates my temperature by sweating. I don’t have to think about making my heart beat once per second or breathing in and out. My body needs no outside help or interference to accomplish its tasks.

Declaration #2 – Every cell of my body is governed by a master control system and that system is my Central Nervous System consisting of my brain, spinal cord and nerves. I know this because I learned it in 5th grade biology, but also because when I have a thought to move my big toe, my brain sends the message down through my spinal cord and into my motor nerves that travel all the way down my leg and into my toe to create that movement.

Declaration #3 – Interference on my master control system (called subluxation) decreases my body’s ability to heal and regulate itself leading to illness and disease. I know this because if my brain were not able to communicate that message to my toe it would not be able to express the potential of my intention. The same is true for my brain communicating with my heart, my lungs, my immune system and every other function of my body.

Declaration #4 – Stress is the only reason I get interference on my nervous system and it can come in several forms: Physical (posture, trauma, sports injuries), Emotional (work, relationship, financial) and Chemical (processed food, medications, drugs and alcohol). No one is free of stress, so everyone is at risk for subluxation.

Declaration #4 – I have been brainwashed by big pharma and the sick care system who tell me that when I get sick it is because of a lack of medication in my body, or a surplus of internal organs.

Declaration #5 – I have seen the error in this thinking because I now realize that my first declaration was one of health and wellness completely independent of drugs and surgery.

Declaration #6 – Wellness is a process and every day I make decisions that either take me closer to illness and death and further from health and life, or closer to health and life and further from illness and death. If I am completely honest with myself and I continue to live life the way I am today, by this time next year will I be closer to life, or closer to death?

Declaration #7 – A chiropractor is the only professional trained and concerned with the detection and removal of subluxation on my nervous system, and since I cannot feel interference, but I am committed to my health and wellbeing, I get checked regularly by a chiropractor to make sure that my body is in the best shape possible to be able to heal and regulate itself.

This final declaration is for me, the author of this article and a community leader for true health and wellness. I am here to help you, to help this community. I have a vision for the Westside to be the healthiest community in Canada, that people from other communities will come here to see exactly what it is we’re doing to be so healthy and they will be so inspired that they take home all the lessons they’ve learned from us and help their community achieve the same success we’ve been able to create here. I can’t achieve my vision without you. You have to want it too. So if you want your children to live long healthy lives, be the change you want to see in them.

Yours in Great Health,

B E T H E M I S S I O N

In 1982, Mother Theresa was asked to come and helprebuild a children’s hospital and orphanage in warstricken Beirut.

After convincing the Israeli army and Palestinian guerillas to temporarily cease fire, she agreed. When her plane arrived, the heads of government and thousands of people showed up to see her and her
entourage begin their mission. They had expected Mother Theresa to bring an army of volunteers, equipment and supplies to rebuild the war ravaged area. They hadorganized dozens of vehicles and security personnel to escort Mother Theresa and her crew to the hospital Instead, to everyone’s surprise, she walked off the plane alone. She met the heads of government, and immediately asked them to bring her to the site where the children were being kept. When she arrived, 37 wounded and mentally handicapped children lay in a tent near the ruins of their former orphanage and hospital.

With a crowd of hundreds looking on, Mother Theresa ran up to one of the children, held it in her arms, and began praying and rocking the child back and forth. After 10 minutes, a woman ran up to Mother Theresa and, weeping, told her that she would bring the child into her family and raise it as her own. Mother Theresa then ran to the next child, and did the same thing. Within an hour and a half, ALL the children had been adopted into loving homes. She had done what she went there to do. She was driven back to the airport, and within 3 hours of her arrival, she departed, having rebuilt that community.

We all know Mother Theresa for being a woman who was on a mission. What we need to
understand is that she WAS the mission. She lived by being an example for us all. Gandhi once
said that we need to “be the change we wish to see in the world.”

We are ALL designed for greatness. If you want a better community, the most powerful thing you
can do is to be a better you. If you want a healthier family then be a healthier you.

We live in a community where far too many people are living sick and wounded lives, dying well
before their time. What’s an even greater tragedy is that while they are still alive, they’re not really
fully living! They are not getting to fulfill their vision for their lives.

We can change that! We can start by BEING THE MISSION. Together, we will lead this community,
and our greater human community, to an amazing life for all. It’s simple, but not always easy. We’re
here to act as your chiropractor, encourager, supporter and coach. We are ready and willing to do
whatever it takes to make this community “amazing”. Remember, good is the enemy of great. We
were designed for so much more. Let’s go out and live it. You’re worth it!

When you come in for your life-enhancing, specific, scientific chiropractic adjustment, you are
allowing your full potential to start shining through. You are allowed to express all the power that is
inside you, so that you can fulfill the vision for your life. That’s why we’re here: to make sure that
you can be person you were called to be, uninterrupted. It’s far more than helping you feel better.

It’s about BEING better, for your sake, for your family’s sake, for our community’s sake and for
humanity’s sake.

"Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin."

Summer is here!

No more teachers, no more books, and no more schedules. Summer is a great time here in the Okanagan, a time where we get to bask in the glory of the valley, take in the sights and entertain all the company that comes to visit.

It’s not a time where we are all that conscious of stress, getting sick, or having to worry about too much other than what we’re going to do this weekend or how we’re going to spend our holidays.

Unfortunately colds, flus, sunburn, food poisoning and heat stroke don’t take a vacation, and air quality in these parts can be pretty bad when the summer fire season is upon us. This month’s article is about getting, and staying healthy throughout the summer months and it’s going to be a short article – because staying healthy is easy.

All you need to do is eat well, take a high quality supplement to fill in any gaps in your diet, exercise regularly, get a good night’s sleep, maintain a positive mental attitude and have a properly functioning nervous system. If you’re having a hard time getting any one of those elements into your regular routine, there are many resources for you to take advantage of including Nutritionists, Personal Trainers, Chiropractors, Counselors and Naturopaths.

If you have those six elements as part of your daily routine, maintaining your great health is a cinch!

Now back to that summer sickness stuff. The warm weather, and poor air quality makes for challenges when you’re getting outside for your daily exercise. Of course you can always head indoors for your workouts, to your local gym or to your home exercise equipment, or you can consider getting up early or scheduling your workout later in the evening when the temperatures cool down. My personal favourite in the summer is to take my workout to the lake and swim! By making these easy changes, you can avoid breathing difficulties, dehydration and heat stroke or exhaustion.

Now that we’ve got your summer workout sick-proofed, we’re going to address your summer diet. Picnic season brings with it potato salad, shrimp cocktail and various other potential food poisoning hazards. The warm weather means that these foods are going to perish a little sooner so be careful about how long they’re not refrigerated, carry lots of ice packs and better yet, get a great cooler bag instead of that old wicker picnic basket.

Sunburn is a major concern of mine recently with the new recommendations of recent research that most sunscreen is more carcinogenic (cancer causing) than the effects of the sun itself. There are organic and non-chemical brands of sunscreen out there that are safe, so do your research when choosing the right one for your family. For those folks who have decided to forgo sunscreen entirely, cover up accordingly, seek the shade and limit your sun exposure to the morning and evening when possible.

Finally, the common cold and flu do not take time off. Even though it is not “flu season”, we still have to maintain good preventive practice to avoid getting and spreading illnesses. This means washing hands regularly with soap and water, cleaning often used surfaces with soap and water, coughing or sneezing into your sleeve not your hands and getting sufficient rest to allow your body to not be run down and susceptible to getting sick.

Maintaining a healthy immune system is crucial to avoiding getting sick and fighting off those illnesses if you do get them. If you find that you get sick a lot more than someone else you know, ask them if they’re sleeping, eating, exercising, thinking positive thoughts and getting adjusted by a chiropractor. You won’t be surprised to find out that they are.

Your Body Is Smarter Than You

Our profession is known for its natural approach to health. We always promote a drug free non-invasive method to achieving wellness. Believe it or not, that’s a difficult line to tow these days. The natural human tendency when we’re in pain is to want to stop that pain, and with pharmaceutical advancements we are able to do that with just about every form of illness – quickly. Even with many years of natural health training and teaching when we both got a touch of food poisoning this past weekend, we wouldn’t have wished it on anyone and would have done anything to make it go away. Suddenly taking a Gravol or Pepto Bismol didn’t sound so bad.

We were both able to resist the temptation and the pharmaceutical norm and we’re both still here to tell the story. Really all it took was listening to our own advice, the advice that we give our patients all the time; that your body is smarter than you! The truth of it is that taking an anti-emetic (stop throwing up medicine), can actually put your body at greater risk for bigger trouble down the road. Your very smart body has recognized a poison in your system and is doing it’s best to get rid of it. If you stupidly (as in not as smart as your body) try to stop that from happening, the toxin can stay there for longer causing further damage to you and your poor digestive system. Not to mention the toxic effects of putting a foreign chemical substance in your very intelligent body that it is unable to recognize and has difficulty processing.

Your body is smarter than you, it knows what to do, so just let it!

We were watching an old episode of Two And A Half Men last night and for those of you who have seen the show know that one of the main characters is a chiropractor. In last night’s episode Alan the chiropractor had a headache and his son Jake suggested he take an aspirin. Upon being told that Alan didn’t believe in pills because they were artificial chemical compounds foreign to the body, Jake responded that pills must be safe because he sees them on TV all the time and TV wouldn’t lie.

It seems a little crazy when you see that mentality in print, but next time you’re sitting down to watch your favourite show, take a count of how many drug commercials you see. From Advil to Tylenol and anti-depressants and cholesterol lowering agents, you are guaranteed to see not one, not two, but many every half hour. It’s astonishing really and it has become so normal that we don’t even notice it. Is it any wonder that when we think of illness that our next thought is of the corresponding drug to treat it?

Challenge yourself for the next week to recognize drug advertising and acknowledge that is in fact what it is – selling a product, not the honest truth. The next part of the challenge is to listen to your smart body. When you get a headache it’s definitely not because of an Advil deficiency, figure out what is causing that headache and make some natural changes. Maybe you didn’t get enough sleep last night, or maybe you’re dehydrated, perhaps you’re stressed. Get to the root of your problem to make it go away for good instead of having a pill tell your smart body to be quiet when it’s screaming at you that something is wrong.

SUNSCREEN!!!!! This Month’s Health Tip

SUNSCREEN!!!!! The media has gone a little crazy in the last little while talking about the dangerous side of sunscreen. Research has shown that the artificial compounds and chemicals contained within most brands of sunscreen are actually more cancer causing than the effects of the sun itself.

We still have to worry about sunburn though, right?

Well you don’t have to give up sunscreen altogether.

Do your research and find an organic natural sunscreen to avoid toxic chemicals and stay out of the direct sun as much as possible. Avoiding the sun will also leave you with less wrinkles and sun spots as you age!

Hit your reset button

We all know that living a balanced healthy life means eating right, taking time to relax, getting a good night’s rest and EXERCISING!!! We are so blessed here in the Okanagan with amazing spots for hiking, biking, walking rollerblading, swimming, skiing, snowboarding, rowing, wakeboarding, golfing, and pretty much every outdoor activity out there. Now that the weather is getting warmer and the sun is starting to come out more, it’s time to dust off your summer gear to get out there and do some amazing things for your health. We are no longer accepting excuses for inactivity – there is no excuse.
If you’re not already active, or you know that you’re not active enough the best thing you can do to get off your couch is to find something active that you love to do. You may have to try 100 things before you find that thing, but keep trying until you do. Give yoga, zumba, crossfit, nia, weight training, ballet, triathlons, walking, soccer, rugby, volleyball all a try.

There are lots of labourers in the valley and we often hear “my job is physical, so I don’t need to exercise” but moving your body is only half of the exercise equation. By taking the time to do a workout, even if it’s a 20 minute walk on your lunch break, you’re saying two really important things to your body: First that you are important enough to take 20 minutes for, and second that you are taking that 20 minutes to enjoy yourself and step away from your work and other responsibilities. Physical jobs also tend to be repetitive creating a physical stress in and of itself and regular exercise outside of work helps to balance the strain of repetitive motions on the job.

Moderate physical activity is a piece of how our bodies turn off the chronic stress that we are constantly putting it under. You know that amazing feeling you get after you exercise? That’s what a stress free body feels like. That is what it feels like when your stress cascade of hormones, muscle tension and racing thoughts all get reset. Gentle exercise hits your reset button to momentarily create a stress free body. A stress free body is at its highest potential to heal from infections, colds and flus. A stress free body (an exercised body) has a far less likelihood of developing chronic diseases of lifestyle, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Moderate physical exercise is just a piece of how our bodies turn off chronic stress. The proper diet with whole organic vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and meats; as well a proper supplementation of those vitamins, and micro nutrients that our foods are deficient in, is also very important. Decreasing the “chemical” stress that we put into our bodies through food preservatives, flavour enhancers, sugar alternatives pesticides, herbicides, and medications, helps decrease the chronic stress in our lives and optimize our overall health.

So today after reading this column we are urging you to try something different – learn a new game and get outside and play. Instead of taking the cart for your weekly golf round, walk 18 holes. Instead of fries with that clubhouse, get a side of seasonal and local organic vegetables. Try something new, or rediscover something old that you used to love it will enhance and optimize your entire health experience, so that you are hitting that reset button with the most efficiency possible.

Yours in Great Health.

Chiropractic care important for mom

Maybe it’s our age, or maybe it’s the onset of warmer weather and people venturing outside more, but it seems that everywhere we look we’re seeing pregnant bellies. That and many of our friends, families and practice members have recently given birth (Congratulations!!!). With this sudden boom of pregnancies and birth, what better time to talk about natural health from conception! Even if you’re not in the pregnancy/newborn/children stage, you surely know someone who is, so pass this helpful information on.

Women are the family gatekeepers for health, and they are definitely on top of maintaining their own personal wellness through regular check ups, screening tests and preventive measures. That is why on average women make up the major patient base in most complimentary health offices. Pregnancy adds a whole new dimension to this female dominance in our Chiropractic office because for the most part, during pregnancy pharmaceuticals are no longer an option. Add to this the many, many physical changes happening in the body with the loosening of ligaments, shifts in the pelvis, weight gain, changes in posture and compression of some of the internal organs, and you get discomfort and even pain. Well, we’ve got some great news for you – Chiropractic care can help you.

Not only do chiropractic adjustments help to alleviate some of the low back and hip pain commonly associated with the later stages of pregnancy, but it also helps in a lot of other ways that aren’t so commonly known.

Research tells us that chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to: Help maintain a healthy pregnancy, control nausea and vomiting, help or stop premature contractions, help you remain active throughout your pregnancy, reduce the need for pain medication during pregnancy by half, and release in-utero constraint, facilitating the turning of breech babies. The Webster Technique performed by chiropractors has been proven to turn breech babies 82% of the time – and it’s non-invasive!

The benefits of chiropractic care don’t stop during pregnancy, they also help on birth day by shortening labour time by 25 to 60 percent, reducing the incidence of back labour, reducing the amount of pain medication during labour and generally helping make delivery more comfortable. Last but certainly not least chiropractic research has shown that regular adjustments can reduce the incidence of postpartum depression, reduce postpartum recovery time and increase the amount of breast milk produced. It’s no wonder that so many women make chiropractic a regular part of their prenatal care!

Getting started during pregnancy can help put you and your baby on the path to lifelong health and wellness, by addressing your health in a pro-active, non-invasive and drug free way. After all who wants to take more medication?

Going to Mexico May Save Your Life!

Spring Break is upon us here in the Okanagan; how are we going to entertain the children for two weeks? Just thinking about it can be a stress in and of itself, but have you ever thought that Spring Break may just save your life? Probably not!

The average Canadian is over-worked, under-paid, and expected to be more productive in less time. Not only are you under stress at work, but as mentioned in previous Westside Health articles, you have to perform at home as a parent, chauffeur, spouse and a hockey coach. There are only 24 hours in each day!

Feeling stressed? Feeling that there is no time for YOU? You are not alone!

Most people that we talk to equate stress to financial, job, and relational stress – all in all emotional stress. However, there are two other types of stressors, physical stress (postural strains, sport and motor vehicle injuries), and chemical stress (pollutants, food preservatives, and medications). Studying the difference between humans and wild animals, it’s been found that humans are the only primates that have higher rates of diseases of lifestyle: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression and other mental disorders. Over the last 100 plus years, since the onset of the industrial revolution, these diseases of lifestyle are far more prevalent than diseases of the past, like leprosy and the plague.

What this evidence shows is that humans have a higher stress lifestyle; family and free time are becoming a thing of the past, more work, and more taxes are the future! When comparing humans to other animals, humans are the only species capable of creating a stress reaction in the body without a stressful situation even presenting itself.

What does this mean? Try this exercise with us. Think of tax season, bills, or a project coming due at work. Did you feel yourself flush, your heart rate go up, and butterflies in your stomach? When we think of a situation that is potentially stress creating – we actually create stress just as if a big rabid dog jumps at you in the dark! This wonderfully unique trait is only common to human beings! We create the same physical stress response in our bodies sitting in traffic worried that we’re going to be late as we do when that dog jumps out at you.

The fact is that stress is necessary – if a big rabid dog is attacking you! Stress is needed to survive! If you are chronically stressed at work and at home, your body creates a cascade of chemical reactions that make you more prone to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, anxiety, IBS, and many more diseases. So if you decrease your stress, it is only natural that you decrease your chances of developing the diseases of lifestyle!

Here are some tips:
1. Create Proper Eating Habits – Eat fresh! Eat organic! Eat clean. Read food labels, if you cannot pronounce the ingredient – it probably shouldn’t go in your mouth. The ingredients should sound like: carrot, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, chicken, salmon. Avoid aspartame, MSG (Monosodium Glutamate – and other trick names), and artificial sweeteners.

2. Get Adequate Exercise – Research shows that 30 minutes of light exercise (walking, yoga, stretching, jogging, swimming) 3 times per week will decrease your risk of heart disease by 33%. It also helps move your bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles, telling your nervous system to decrease the stress response in your body.

3. Create Proper Nervous System Function – Your brain, spinal cord, spine and nerves control every function in your body (heart, lungs, digestion, reproduction, etc.). Any misaligned spinal bones or stress on your nervous system stops the transmission of signals coming from your brain to the rest of your body, and can create dysfunction to organs and systems in the body. Research shows that chiropractic adjustments create the proper alignment in spine and nervous system thus restoring the proper function to those organs and systems in the body.

4. Have a Positive Mental Attitude – There is a tremendous connection between your thoughts, your nervous system, body and immune system. “Psycho-neuro-immunology” – a fast growing field, suggests that the way you think, directly affects your nervous system and your overall health and wellbeing. Think of a very stressful time in your life; death of a loved one, exams, bills – were you sick after? Personal time, trips to the beach, or anything you enjoy be it meditation, prayer, deep-breathing, yoga, smiling, laughing, or even a 10 second time-out, will help you minimize the effects of all three types of stress.

So, a trip to Mexico may save your life, by decreasing your stress, and decreasing the likelihood of developing diseases of lifestyle.
You deserve it. Doctors’ orders!

Kelowna Health Wellness and Chiropractic Care

In western society people don't go to the doctor unless they are sick. This is becoming a thing of the past.

People are quickly realizing our so-called "healthcare system" is better termed a "sick care system" and that health is based on how your body is functioning and not how you feel, or the lack of symptoms.

The majority of our practice members realize this key concept, that health is a combination of how you think, how you move, and what you put into your body. This is wellness care.

How well your body functions, is based primarily upon the function of the master control system - the nervous system. Practice members in our office understand and opt into this true model of healthcare. They realize that detection of little problems earlier is easier than fixing a major problem in the future.

Everyone wants to feel good; however, your health should not be based on how you feel. Subluxation may exist in your spine without any symptom or even pain. Similar to heart disease, high blood pressure, and dental cavities, subluxation creates problems without you even knowing.

If you are interested in how your Kelowna wellness chiropractic wellness care can help you create the healthy life that you desire for you and your family, call or email us today, to find out how we can help you.

Whiplash and Chiropractic Care Kelowna

Car accidents, at any speed, can create problems in your spine and nervous system. Being in a rear-end accident creates an immediate forward motion in your body towards your seatbelt. At the exact same second your head and your neck are snapped backwards. Any fender bender can create a whiplash injury, with or without any symptoms forming.

Whiplash injuries can include spinal misalignments (subluxation), which put pressure on the nervous system. In severe cases these misalignments can be coupled with injuries to the ligaments, and even the vertebrae of the spine.

Chiropractic care can help restore normal function to the spine and the nervous system. Millions of car accident victims have found relief from chiropractic adjustments, and a swift return to their normal daily lives.

If you are looking for a natural approach to your whiplash injury, chiropractic healthcare can help. Call us or email us to book your initial consultation.

Stress and Chiropractic Care Kelowna

Believe it or not, stress can be beneficial to your health.

A 20 minute jog in the morning before work can put enough stress on your system to boost your metabolism for the day. Stress is also needed for you to wake up from your good nights sleep. However, if you are constantly under stress, your body and your health will suffer.

There are three types of stress that you encounter in your life:

1.Physical Stress - These are the types of stress that can come in the form of injuries in sports, car accidents, or even injuries from poor posture and sleep habits. Physical stress can create the stress response in your body and lead to long term health issues.
2.Mental/Emotional Stress - Probably the most commonly talked about stress. Examples are relationship problems with kids, spouses, or parents. Problems at work with your boss or co-workers. Problems with finances. Problems with worrying about something that you cannot control.
3.Chemical Stress - The least talked about stress is chemical stress. Examples include anything that is put into the body either voluntarily or involuntarily, that work as a toxin on your system. Environmental toxins such as pesticides and fungicides, food preservatives and flavor enhancer's (aspartame and MSG), and of course any and all prescription medications!
All three types of stress, when in combination or alone, create an immense amount of strain on your body and your nervous system. Stress has been coined "the silent killer" and for good reason. Chronic levels of stress without intervention are linked to higher incidences of:

•heart disease and stroke
•diabetes
•cancer
•obesity
•infertility
and many other diseases of lifestyle.

If you are stressed, and are looking for a natural and healthy way to manage it, chiropractic care can help you. We can give you strategies to manage different types of stress, as well as making sure that your spine and nervous system are functioning properly.

Scoliosis and Chiropractic Care Kelowna

Often noticed by clothing fitting abnormally, a low shoulder on one side, or a low hip, scoliosis may be affecting your son or daughter.

Scoliosis is defined as an abnormal curvature from side to side in the spine. It mainly affects adolescent girls from ages 8-18, and if left undetected can lead to abnormalities in heart, lung and reproductive organ function.

There are three main causes of scoliosis:

1.Congenital - A theory that there is a genetic predisposition
2.Habitual - Possibly caused by behavioral routines
3.Idiopathic - There is no known cause
Whatever the cause of scoliosis, early detection is essential in minimizing the effects that it creates. If left undetected, scoliosis usually progresses and can worsen.

The traditional approach to scoliosis is to wait! If severe enough the solution is to surgically place steel rods on either side of the spine coupled with a back brace to stop the progression.

The natural approach to scoliosis can include postural retraining along with regular and specific chiropractic care. Over the course of several months or longer the muscles and ligaments retrain, and the spine can often right itself to its proper position.

There have many young people helped in our Kelowna chiropractic office that have scoliosis. If you are concerned that your son or daughter may be suffering from scoliosis, or you would like to prevent any further damage, call or email us for more information.

Back & Neck Pain? What Your Body is Telling You!

We want you to sit back and think for a minute. How many of you own smoke alarms in your homes? Everyone! It is the law. What happens when that smoke alarm goes off at 1:24am? You get up, give the house a once over to make sure that there are no threats of fire, and that your precious investments are safe, your family and your home.

So what does a smoke alarm have to do with Back and Neck Pain?

At least 80% of the population will at some point in their lives experience back pain and/or neck pain; it will be severe enough for you to miss work, seek some type of pain management therapy or take a pain killer. In the hustle and bustle of today’s lifestyle, we have no time for pain! We have to pay the bills, get the kids to hockey, make dinner, and be a husband or wife, a friend, and a parent. North American culture values “30 minute meals”, “8 minute abs”, “5 minute buns” and of course the “quick fix” to back and neck pain.

We meet people every single day telling us about their tight shoulders and their sore back. As Chiropractors, we are trained to dig further. “Any tingling, burning, or headaches?” As we probe we find that that same person deals with headaches several days of the month! They often think these are “normal” headaches. No headache is normal – it’s an indicator of your body out of homeostasis, or normal balance.

“Well Doc, I do get headaches every day, but if I feel one coming on I just take three Extra Strength Gel Tabs, and 50% of the time it kills the headache.”

What is wrong with that statement? It’s exactly as if your smoke alarm went off at 1:24am and instead of checking the house to see what the problem was, you just went down the hall to the alarm and took the batteries out. The horrible loud noise stops, but it does nothing to address the fire that’s raging in your kitchen.

This is exactly what you are doing when you take a pain killer! Headaches, back pain, neck pain, or any symptom that your body creates, is a warning sign! It is your internal smoke alarm. Do not pull the battery, do not ignore the noise and hope it goes away. Taking three “Extra Strength Gel Tabs” every day only masks the pain of your headaches, without addressing the actual cause. Just like the fire in your kitchen!

We know that sensation of pain is controlled by your brain and nervous system. Pain sensation only represents approximately 10% of your health story, the other 90% of your nervous system controls the function of your organs, glands, blood vessels and the motion of your muscles; you cannot feel these parts, but I think you will agree that they are all pretty important! Pain in other areas can indicate decreased function to these vital parts of your body!

Your neck contains the brainstem and spinal cord, any neck pains or headaches suggest dysfunction to the organs and systems controlling blood pressure, breathing, and immune function. Often people with neck pain also suffer from high blood pressure, chronic fatigue/irritability, chronic colds/flus, sinus congestion, colic and ear infections – especially our children!

Any pain or burning in the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, or in the mid back suggest dysfunction in the nerves that supply the heart, lungs, and digestive system. People with pain in this area can also suffer from heart palpitations (irregular heart beat), chest pain that mimics heart attack, anxiety and breathing problems (asthma).

Low back pain can relate to problems with the intestines, bladder and reproductive systems. Female low back pain sufferers often complain of menstrual irregularities, and even infertility issues. Low back pain sufferers also report higher incidences of unexplained hip and knee pain.

Determining the cause of your pains and aches, and properly correcting the problem is crucial in attaining overall health and well-being. So when your smoke alarm rings, take it seriously, because it is telling you something – there is a problem!!! Just like you get up to check the house, and make sure your precious investments are safe, so should you when it comes to your health. You only have one body and you need to take care of it so that you can provide for your family, send your kids to school, get them to hockey, be a parent, friend, and spouse.

Remember, if you don’t have time to be sick, then you need to make time to get and stay healthy!

Yours in health,

Dr. Travis Pillipow DC and Dr. Sarah Tremblay DC

Sciatica and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Often caused by pressure on the nerves in your low back, sciatica can create excruciating pain that runs down one or both of your legs.

Sciatica can often include involvement of the discs (disc bulge or herniated discs) that put pressure on the nerves, starting with lower back pain and resulting in dull to sharp pains that run down the legs.

Traditional therapies for sciatica are drug therapy which only masks the pain and symptoms, physical therapies which merely help your body become more tolerant to the pain, and complicated surgery which creates irreversible changes to the bone and disc material in your back.

Fortunately there is hope. Millions have found relief from chiropractic care, by increasing the motion in the joints of the low back.

If you or a loved one is suffering from sciatica, a thorough consultation and examination with your West Kelowna chiropractors, can determine if chiropractic care is right for you. Call or email us for more information or to book an appointment.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Although it may be hard to make the connection between pregnancy and chiropractic care, moms-to-be can benefit immensely from regular chiropractic adjustments.

There are four stages that chiropractic care can help both mother and child:

1.Pre-Conception - Regular chiropractic adjustments create a clear connection between your brain and your reproductive and hormonal systems. A properly functioning nervous system promotes regular menstrual cycles, proper hormone and uterine balance, creating a fertile environment for conception.
2.Pregnancy - Regular chiropractic adjustments help maintain proper spinal alignment, proper nervous system function, ligament flexibility and balance. As your baby grows it promotes your body to take the proper position and function for an easy birth process.
3.Labor and Birth - Mothers that are under regular chiropractic care boast about more natural births, less time in labor and less complications during the birth itself.
4.After Birth - Chiropractic care is for your baby as well. Even the fastest and most natural of childbirths create pressure on your baby's nervous system. If a subluxation is present in your baby's spine, he or she may be more prone to constipation, colic, inability to suckle, and behavior abnormalities.
Although chiropractic care does guarantee results, countless moms, dads and babies benefit everyday from our natural approach to family wellness.

For more information, or if you are considering a natural approach to pregnancy and motherhood, call us or email us today.

PMS and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Estimated to affect approximately 90% of women at some point in their lifetime, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) can range from mild cramping and menstrual irregularities to extremely debilitating abdominal pain and cessation of menstrual cycles.

Unfortunately, we hear the danger phrase in our office, "It’s okay. I just have to curl up into the fetal position for two days!" Most women have "learned to deal with it."

Your nervous system regulates and controls every cell of your entire body, including the cells of your reproductive and hormonal systems. The nerves that exit your low back (lumbar spine) directly supply your reproductive and hormone producing organs. Any misalignment (subluxation) in the lumbar spine puts pressure on the nerves that supply those organs, and can be related to:

•Over Activity - heavy bleeding, and cramping
•Under Activity - missed periods and infertility
•Distortions in Activity - irregular bleeding, pain and reduced fertility
Although chiropractic does not treat any reproductive condition, including PMS and infertility, many women experience amazing results when pressure removed from the nervous system.

If you are sick and tired of suffering, and want those 2 days each month back, phone your West Kelowna chiropractors to determine if your problem could be coming from your spine and nervous system.

Pinched Nerve and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

I think that I have a "Pinched Nerve"

It is called a pinched nerve, because that is exactly what it feels like. However, it is a little more complicated.

When a spinal bone is misaligned, the nerves that exit the spine through small openings can become encroached. This scenario is what we call a subluxation. The subluxation puts pressure on the nerve, which in turn causes interference to the message that your brain is trying to deliver via the nerve.

The chiropractic adjustment is a specific and highly advanced maneuver that removes the subluxation. The adjustment in turn removes pressure from the nerve, allowing the body to heal itself.

To find out if your Kelowna chiropractor can help you with a "pinched nerve" call or email us for your initial consultation.

Neck Pain and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Neck pain is one of the most common complaints that practice members initially seek chiropractic care for.

The neck is the most nerve sensitive area of your entire spine. If there is a misalignment (subluxation) in the neck, there is pressure on the many different nerves.

Imagine holding a 12 pound bowling ball on the tips of your fingers, hard job! That is what your neck does all day long. This is one of the reasons that it is so prone to misaligning.

Typically most practice members can experience anything that results in an inability to turn the neck from side to side, combined with sharp pains, to a dull ache throughout the entire neck and shoulders.

Any type of neck pain is a warning signal that there is something wrong in the body. Leaving a misalignment (subluxation) can create longer standing issues (arthritis and permanent nerve damage resulting in further health complaints) if not addressed quickly.

At our office, we focus on removing nervous system pressure from your neck, primarily. The reason for this is because of the rich nerve supply in the neck. Also, because your neck is where your spinal cord and your brainstem originate, misalignments in your neck put an immense amount of pressure on your brainstem and spinal cord, which in turn can create dis-ease in your entire body.

If you are suffering from neck pain and you would like it to stop, or even better, if you want to be proactive in terms of your health and would like to get checked, call and book your no obligation consultation with your Kelowna chiropractors.

"An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure!"

Heartburn and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Also known as gastro-esophageal reflux, heartburn is caused by weakness of the muscles between your stomach and your esophagus. The weakness allows the acidic contents of the stomach to be regurgitated back into the esophagus.

If left untreated over time, the acid reflux can create ulcers, and even lead to forms of cancer in the esophagus.

Although chiropractic is not a cure for heartburn, many of our practice members have found relief from their chronic heartburn.

Subluxations in the mid back can create pressure on the nerves that supply the sphincter muscles of the esophagus/stomach junction. The chiropractic adjustment removes the nerve pressure, and the body restores the function of the sphincter muscles.

If you are suffering needlessly from heartburn or acid reflux, call us today to determine if chiropractic care can help you.

Headaches and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

We often hear the danger phrases in our office, "It is no problem Doc, I have learned to live with it, and it only happens 2 times per week!"

Headaches are a very predominant problem, and one of the most common conditions that bring practice members into a chiropractor's office.

While extremely common, not everybody gets headaches! Therefore, they are not normal, and nobody should have to "learn to live with it." Popular cultural solutions to headaches today, suggest taking something for your headaches. An over-the-counter pain killer, prescription pain killers, and in some drastic cases, people resort to the use of illegal narcotics! A symptom (headache) is your body's way of telling you that there is something wrong inside. Taking a pain killer to mask the symptom is like pulling the battery on the smoke alarm in the hallway, even though there is a fire blazing in the kitchen.

One of the most common causes of headaches is misaligned spinal bones (subluxation) that put pressure on nerves in the neck and head. This pressure may cause the muscles to tighten (tension type headaches) or may even cause a constriction of blood vessels to the brain and head (a proposed theory for migraine headaches). While chiropractic does not treat headaches, practice members experience immense relief from some symptoms of headaches, when the pressure is removed from the nerves by the chiropractic adjustment.

Ear Infections and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Ear infections (otitis media) result in a great number of pediatrician visits by parents and children. Most parents feel helpless when it comes to helping their children with this condition. Traditional approaches to ear infections are administering antibiotic therapy, which in the case of an acute bacterial infection, can work. However, most of the time antibiotics do not work as the infection is viral in origin. In chronic cases, your child may be recommended to have tubes placed in their ear canals and/or unnecessary surgical methods to alleviate these symptoms.

Chiropractic care does not treat ear infections. However, having the upper region of your child's neck checked can determine if there may be pressure on the nerves that supply the inner muscles and tissues of the ear. As well, any pressure in the upper neck may lead to a poor functioning immune system, thereby making the muscles and tissues of the inner ear more prone to infections from viruses and bacteria.

If your child is having ear aches or ear infections at a regular occurrence, they may have misalignments or pressure in the upper region of their neck. To get your child checked by your West Kelowna chiropractors, call us or email us.

Colic and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Imagine having an upset stomach, a headache and your tummy hurts, and you cannot tell anyone.

Colic, which was previously thought of as indigestion, can affect your newborn baby. If your baby is irritable, cannot sleep and has persistent inconsolable crying for 3 hours each day, three days each week for three straight weeks, they likely are colicky.

Less modern treatments included gripe water, small amounts of alcohol, and plainly just dealing with it, now in modern times seem archaic.

Many parents explain that after having their colicky infant adjusted that the results are almost immediate. This can be explained by looking back at the birth process itself. Even natural childbirth can be extremely traumatic to the nervous system of newborns, and is usually where the baby's first subluxation happens. If left undetected, there is immense pressure on your baby's nervous system, which can lead to changes in behavior, sleep patterns, or what we call, colic.

There have been many research studies determining the effectiveness of chiropractic and colic. Although not a treatment for colic, a study from Denmark found that 94% of babies that were adjusted with colic type symptoms found immediate relief within 2 weeks of commencing care (Klougart et al., 1989).

Carpal Tunnel and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

Caused by pressure on the nerves that supply the hand and fingers, many people find relief from carpal tunnel with chiropractic care. Just like the joints in the spine are prone to misaligning, so are the joints in the wrist.

Many are surprised to learn, that after a thorough chiropractic examination, their carpal tunnel symptoms (tingling in the arm, wrist and hand, weak grip strength and a feeling of tightness in the wrist) actually come from pressure on the nerves that are exiting from your neck! Continued pressure on these nerves over time, can lead to permanent damage to the very sensitive nervous system.

Many people have great results with carpal tunnel after chiropractic care. If you would like to find out how chiropractic can help you with any complaint, contact our office by phone or email

Bed Wetting and Chiropractic Care in Kelowna

For your children bed wetting, also known as nocturnal enuresis, can be a very embarrassing and traumatizing condition. An inability to fit in, peer ridicule, plastic mattress covers, and being wet at night all take a massive toll on the confidence of your child.

Caused by weak muscles that control emptying of the bladder, bed wetting is not your child's fault. The nerves that control these muscles of the bladder come from the lower portion of your child's spine. Any pressure on these nerves from misalignments in the spine or sacrum may result in improper function of these muscles, or the end result, bed wetting. If your child has had any falls, accidents or even any difficulty during the birthing process, he or she may have these misalignments in their spine.

Chiropractic care is not a cure for bed wetting; however, many children around the world find better bladder control, less trips to the bathroom at night, and more confidence after receiving chiropractic care.

If your child is suffering emotionally and physically from bed wetting, and you have any questions, or you would like to make an appointment to get your children's spine and nervous system checked, phone or email us.
