It's been a while! Our blog, newsletters, Facebook and Twitter have been quiet for quite a few months and I would like to take full responsibility. I haven't abandoned you, in fact I've been thinking about you A LOT but needed a spare hour or two to get my thoughts together and write them down. As many of you know, Dr. Travis and I welcomed our first child last fall and he is AMAZING! Time consuming, but AMAZING! Before he arrived many a parent told me to get as much sleep as I possibly could before giving birth, and believe me I got what I thought was a ton of sleep, but nothing could prepare me for how tired I've been for the last 10 months. That's the reason I need an hour or two to gather my thoughts - they're pretty scattered and I have to chase them around just as much as the baby.
In the last year I've learned many lessons, for example; nothing wakes a baby from a dead sleep like you quietly laying down yourself for a nap in the next room; nothing is more bonding or divisive than parenting, and staying at home with your kids is the most rewarding, isolating, exhausting, and sometimes inexplicably time warping experience. Sometimes Dr. Travis gets home from the office and asks me what we've been up to and I'm alarmed by how full my day felt and how little I actually have to tell him.
But back to my second lesson, as parents we all make choices for our little ones and I truly do believe that every good parent does the best they can with what they have at the time when raising their families. Sometimes we find out later that those choices may not have been the best option, but we are really all trying our best. Dr. Travis and I have raised a classic Chiro-kid. He has been adjusted since the day he was born, he is breastfed, he has never taken a medication, he has never eaten a grain or tasted anything processed including sugar, and he is not immunized. He has never been sick a day in his life, he is happy and healthy and believe it or not, every child that I have met that has been raised this way has the same healthy glow, chubby cheeks and bright eyes.
As health practitioners we feel that it is our duty to share with other parents our guide to raising healthy babies, but often when parenting choices are questioned, backs go up.
Somehow mainstream parenting encourages covering our babies in questionable soaps and lotions (Johnson and Johnson are changing ingredients in their baby products to make them safer, but will not disclose what is currently unsafe about them and the changes won't be taking place until next year), feeding them foods they cannot digest (babies do not produce pancreatic amylase - the enzyme necessary to digest grains INCLUDING RICE, until they are 12 months old) and giving them medications and immunizations that show limited efficacy and the potential for great harm (we have sadly seen many vaccine injured children in our practice).
The problem is that without good information, we can't make good choices. And just like you would never put your baby in a car without them being in a proper car seat like our grandparents did with their children, if you don't know things are unsafe you don't avoid them. We strive to get our patients and everyone we love to inform themselves. There are a lot of better options out there than what is popular or common. Try using a natural baby wash from your local health food store - we love Calming Lavender Baby Wash by Little Twig. If your little one is teething, skip the Tylenol and Oragel and go for the Homeopathic teething remedies available in the health food aisle at your local Superstore - they really do work! When feeding your baby opt for organic food, ideally prepared by you. Even the good canned baby food has to be pasteurized - a heating process that kills bacteria, but also kills the nutrients in the food, not to mention the flavour. As I mentioned earlier, your baby cannot digest grains, so there's no point in feeding them rice cereal, oatmeal, baby mum-mums or anything like that until they're at least one year old. To get your baby the necessary iron, fill them up with protein, fat and green leafy vegetables. Our little guy loves organic tofu puree with kale or spinach, sweetened with berries and banana. He's not much of a meat eater.
There are so many ways to improve your health, you just have to care enough to find out about it. If there's one thing that I'm sure of, it's that parents care, and they want their kids to have the best start possible. Inform yourself - it's the best way to be sure you're doing your best.

Is Winter Over Yet?
I think I speak for everyone, except a skier or two, when I say that we’re ready for winter to be over. The cloudy days, the cold temperatures, the snow and slush; it’s not for us sun and heat loving Okanaganers. It’s only March and we’re already wishing for June. Today’s article is about squishing a little more winter fun into the next few weeks while we wait. There are the obvious winter fun escapes like Mexico and Hawaii, but I’m talking about taking advantage of the natural surroundings here in Kelowna and the surrounding area. We all know there’s great downhill skiing and snowboarding nearby, but did you know you can get out for some cross country skiing or snowshoeing just up the road at Telemark? Unfortunately Lake Okanagan doesn’t freeze over to give us the romance of skating on the pond, but the new ice rink at Stuart Park is a great way to get out, enjoy a little winter atmosphere and get your exercise. For those of you who like to get out for your hikes, but avoid it in the winter because of ice and snow, consider picking up a pair of snow cleats to put over your hiking boots – you can pick up a pair at Costco for cheap and continue to get out for your walks. The winter trails are a lot quieter giving you the feeling of being at one with nature, and you don’t have to worry about running into any bears.
If you’re more of an indoor activity kind of person, put your thinking caps on to get yourself moving and in a great mood. Take a dance class, or head over to Johnson Bentley for a swim (it’s nice and warm in there!). Take up Hot Yoga, or get yourself signed up for a healthy cooking class. There are a ton of ways to keep active and in turn keep happy in the winter. By learning new things, and getting your daily dose of exercise you can combat the winter blahs, and think about how interesting your water cooler talk will be if you’ve got something new on the go.
Get your friends together for an activity that you enjoy, maybe a snowball fight, or a book club or a competitive game of capture the flag. Being with people that you love and that make you laugh will also help you get through those days that are gray and make you feel a little down. Start planning your St. Patty's Day party, with themed foods you can serve, what games you can play and what the prizes might be. Making a plan to come together, being creative and getting a little silly will be just the antidote for the end of Winter blahs.
Oh, one last thing. Take your vitamin D. It’ll give you a mood lift, help to energize you and get you through this final push before spring arrives. Get moving, and the warm sun will be here before you know it.

Touching base
I'm sitting here at my desk thinking about you. I don't really have a specfic topic to discuss today, but you were all on my mind and I wanted to reach out to you in some way. Maybe it's because I've been away in Vernon helping out another Chiropractor up there three days a week and I'm feeling a little disconnected from my Health In Hand Family. Well, I'm 2 weeks in and my experience there so far has been great, and although I guess none of us really ever know what people really think, they seem to have good things to say. More importantly, I have learned a few amazing tips and tricks from a 20 year veteran that you can expect to experience in our office in the near future. It's incredible really what spending a little time with someone who does what you do in a professional capacity. Yes, Dr. Travis and I spend lots of time together, but that doesn't count. We also have lots of friends who are Chiropractors, but as with most people we really try to leave our work at work. If only schedules and salaries and time allowed us all to spend a little time with other people in our professions. Observing the person who does your job, but has been there a few years longer than you, or shadowing your boss for a day. Most people are eager to share their knowledge and their little tricks to get the job done all the more efficiently. Think about how much better you would be at your job, heck, at life, if everyone just pooled all their "get it done" tips. Do yourself a favour this week, spend 20 minutes following one of your co-workers or bosses around and see what you can learn.

6 Week Weight Loss Challenge
This January we're helping our practice members, their friends and family get 2011 off to a great start by issuing a challenge. If you want to lose a few pounds, kick your sugar cravings to the curb and start yourself on a path to better health and wellness, we're here to help you.
On Wednesday January 19th at 6pm at Health In Hand Family Chiropractic we are hosting a kickoff party to the 6 week challenge. Registered participants will compete to lose weight and make the biggest change in their lives for cash! The winner takes home 40% of all registration fees, and others will win prizes too along the way.
The party will be a quick info session with Dr. Travis and Dr. Sarah as well as Gordon Palmer. We'll be swapping some healthy recipes to get you started. Gordon will demonstrate and hand out home exercise routines to help you reach your goals. And we'll be here to keep you motivated and on task to get results.
We'll be checking in with you again in February to see how you're doing at the midway point and to encourage you to keep your eyes on the prize for the last 3 weeks.
Even if you're not a current chiropractic patient and you want to get on the wellness wagon, give our office a call and we'll give you all the details, or just come on by on the 19th and join in the party!
Registration in the challenge is $25 per person and we'll be weighing, measuring, and taking your "Before" photo at the Kickoff, so wear something form fitting!
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Secrets for successful ageing
Since November is a great month to honour people, I thought I would write today’s piece about an incredible member of our practice. With Veterans Week and Remembrance Day looming, it just seems fitting. Especially since he is a WWII vet.
Clement Kromhoff is easily the most interesting person I have ever met. At 92 years old, he is full of stories, amazing thoughts about health and a life well lived and he always has something kind to say to the people around him. Oh, and he’s also hilarious; everyone in his immediate proximity seems to be smiling. He speaks several languages, drove the Model T Ford and loves to share the great produce that he grows in his backyard.
Many people will be awed just by his age, and the fact that he is not only in his nineties, but he is there in great health is even more inspiring. He lives alone, still drives and still works in his garden. To some that will sound unbelievable, but the truth is we should all be living as well and as long as Clem.
Those fruits, vegetables, herbs and seasonings that he grows with his own two hands are his secret to success. Clem will tell you that sugar is “white death” and that he never uses the stuff and that if the rest of the country didn’t consume so much of it we would be living longer and healthier lives. He controls the quality of what he puts in his body by growing it himself, and has done so for a great deal of his life. Of course there was the period of time that he was stationed overseas in WWII, where immense stress, less than ideal food, and I’m sure poor sleep would have taken a few years off his life, but he seems to have bounced back and found balance. He gave up alcohol, formed a relationship with God, and pursued his passions.
Clem was married to the love of his life for nearly 70 years, and has formed a strong support system of neighbours, friends, and even acupuncturists and chiropractors around him. When he recently fell from a ladder in his yard there were people there to pick him up, dust him off and make sure that he was on the road to recovery. You can’t help but love this man, and I think the lessons we can all learn here are obvious, but I’m going to outline them for you anyway.
Secrets for successful ageing 1 – preserve your body with healthful food, light to moderate exercise and limit sugar! 2 – keep your mind fit by staying engaged in the world, learn a new language, go out and meet people. 3 – build a strong support system! Sometimes all you need is a hand to hold, or someone to listen to your problem or someone to celebrate a victory with. Cast a wide social net and you’ll always be able to find someone to help you. 4 – Pursue your passions, a life without purpose is not a life worth living. Find the things that inspire you, that stir your creativity or your give you that excited butterflies in the belly sensation. In the pursuit of something you love, nothing feels like work, and time flies. You’ll be 99 years old before you know it.

November is a time for reflection
It’s the month we use to honour our veterans, to think about their sacrifice for our health and livelihood. It’s also a great month to use for pausing to think about the mania that is Christmas that is fast approaching. November is a great time to take stock, be greatful and prepare yourself for upcoming challenges. So remember to pause.
This month @ Health In Hand
Inside the office you may have noticed our new tree on the wall. Its purpose is to be a family tree of sorts and we would love to hang pictures of our chiropractic family on there. We have been slowly taking pictures of the children in our practice and we would love to have a photo of your well adjusted child, so remind us when you’re in the office with them to take one, or bring a copy of one of your old favourites in! For those of you who have been coming in without having your children checked, let the family tree remind you that we’re a family wellness office, and we want to make sure that ALL members of your family are subluxation-free.
Wellness Orientations
We’re happy to report that Wellness Orientations have been very well attended in the last month or so, and if you haven’t been to one yet, it’s a great opportunity to learn some vital information. Some of it you will already know, but a lot of the time we need to be reminded. The rest will help you to understand what your chiropractor is doing for you, what you can do at home to help yourself and why you need to come in so darn often in the beginning. The Orientations are scheduled for Monday evenings at 6:15pm and all are welcome, even if you’ve been to one before, or you have never stepped foot in our office, but want to find out more. Just give us a call and let us know you’re coming so we can save you a spot.

What does a chiropractor do in Kelowna?
What does a chiropractor do?
When you hear the word chiropractor you might immediately think of the word “quack”. There is a great deal of disagreement about the effectiveness of chiropractors and what they can and can’t do to help improve your health. Chiropractors are most commonly associated with relieving back pain. Some chiropractors may claim to be able to improve other health conditions such as asthma, chronic ear infections, and a myriad of other common medical conditions. You probably either love chiropractors or think that they use their techniques to keep reeling patients back into their office for repeated treatments. There may be truth to both of these schools of thought.
There is great evidence that chiropractors can help improve back pain and other musculoskeletal problems by realigning the vertebrae of the patient’s spine. A chiropractor can manipulate vertebrae and cause them to move back into place. Repeated manipulations may be necessary because the vertebrae want to slip back into their old positions. A good chiropractor will use his hands to manipulate the vertebrae back into alignment. Some chiropractors use mechanical devices or small hammer-like tools to tap vertebrae back into place.
Some chiropractors subscribe to the theory of subluxation. Subluxation theory supposes that the misalignment of vertebrae puts pressure on components of the nervous system that in turn causes all sorts of health problems within the body. These chiropractors will tell you that chiropractic care is a necessary part of your health and well being. If you visit a chiropractor that subscribes to subluxation theory you will most likely be put on a regimen of regular chiropractic care indefinitely. There has not been any significant scientific proof that chiropractic care provides any improvement in non-musculoskeletal problems but it may provide a strong placebo effect to patients who are suffering from them.
A chiropractor may often point to the ‘popping’ noise that occurs when he adjusts your vertebrae as evidence of misalignment. Chiropractors often use this sound to reinforce your belief that you need ongoing care. What many patients don’t know is that it is possible to make this ‘popping’ noise by manipulating normal aligned vertebrae.
Your first visit to a chiropractor can include any number of tests. A chiropractor will first ask you for your medical history and an indication of where you are experiencing pain. Some chiropractors will perform x-rays on your spine to check of misalignments and specific problems. Chiropractors who subscribe to the theory of subluxation may have special sensor scopes that they use on your spine to detect areas of warmth that would indicate restriction of nerves. Once your trouble areas are determined you may undergo a series of adjustments to your spine. Spinal adjustments are usually not painful.
You will probably be asked to return for a number of regular visits for continued manipulation. The chiropractor may take additional x-rays to determine the status of your condition. If you are visiting a chiropractor for pain in your back you should stop your treatment as soon as you are feeling better. Repeated chiropractic care has not been shown to be of benefit unless the patient is still having pain.
Many insurance companies are now covering chiropractic visits. Chiropractic care can be an effective tool for relieving back pain without medication just as physical and occupational therapy can be. Be wary of chiropractors that subscribe to the theory of subluxation and those that indicate the need for indefinite repeat visits. Check with your family doctor about the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments for conditions other than mechanical musculoskeletal pain

When you hear the word chiropractor you might immediately think of the word “quack”. There is a great deal of disagreement about the effectiveness of chiropractors and what they can and can’t do to help improve your health. Packing your child’s backpack the right way
Back to school brings books, pencils, heavy bags and some dirty looks from your chiropractors if you’re putting undue stress and strain on the growing spine of your children. The body remembers! This point should be coming firmly into focus for most of our baby boomers.
The first thing you need to do is select a GREAT backpack. It should have lots of pockets and compartments to equally distribute weight, it should have padded shoulder straps and it should even have a waist belt to help take the load off when they need it the most.
Next, the bag needs to be worn properly. Every time I see a kid with the backpack on one shoulder, I think about the adults in my practice with one shoulder much higher than the other in the postural exam. Make sure they wear both shoulder straps and that the straps are tight enough that the bag rides above their bum. Loose straps put undue shoulder and rotational stress on their spines when they turn.
Next, children should not be carrying all their books and binders and lunch and everything else back and forth from home every day. If Johnny doesn’t have math every day he can leave his book at home, or in his locker on his days off. The weight of the bag should never exceed 15% of the child’s body weight. So if your child weighs 60 lbs, the bag should not weigh more than 9 lbs.
Now that you have the info, happy shopping for that perfect bag and the very light contents to fill it!

Declare your health freedom
I want you to read this article aloud. First and foremost because it is a declaration of your right to health and wellness, and secondly because you need to share it with the people around you. So shed your fears about being the crazy person who reads the paper aloud, and be a leader who helps guide our community to greatness.
Declaration #1 – My body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism. I know this because when I cut myself, my body jumps to action and creates a cascade of events that results in the healing of that cut. When I am too hot, my body regulates my temperature by sweating. I don’t have to think about making my heart beat once per second or breathing in and out. My body needs no outside help or interference to accomplish its tasks.
Declaration #2 – Every cell of my body is governed by a master control system and that system is my Central Nervous System consisting of my brain, spinal cord and nerves. I know this because I learned it in 5th grade biology, but also because when I have a thought to move my big toe, my brain sends the message down through my spinal cord and into my motor nerves that travel all the way down my leg and into my toe to create that movement.
Declaration #3 – Interference on my master control system (called subluxation) decreases my body’s ability to heal and regulate itself leading to illness and disease. I know this because if my brain were not able to communicate that message to my toe it would not be able to express the potential of my intention. The same is true for my brain communicating with my heart, my lungs, my immune system and every other function of my body.
Declaration #4 – Stress is the only reason I get interference on my nervous system and it can come in several forms: Physical (posture, trauma, sports injuries), Emotional (work, relationship, financial) and Chemical (processed food, medications, drugs and alcohol). No one is free of stress, so everyone is at risk for subluxation.
Declaration #4 – I have been brainwashed by big pharma and the sick care system who tell me that when I get sick it is because of a lack of medication in my body, or a surplus of internal organs.
Declaration #5 – I have seen the error in this thinking because I now realize that my first declaration was one of health and wellness completely independent of drugs and surgery.
Declaration #6 – Wellness is a process and every day I make decisions that either take me closer to illness and death and further from health and life, or closer to health and life and further from illness and death. If I am completely honest with myself and I continue to live life the way I am today, by this time next year will I be closer to life, or closer to death?
Declaration #7 – A chiropractor is the only professional trained and concerned with the detection and removal of subluxation on my nervous system, and since I cannot feel interference, but I am committed to my health and wellbeing, I get checked regularly by a chiropractor to make sure that my body is in the best shape possible to be able to heal and regulate itself.
This final declaration is for me, the author of this article and a community leader for true health and wellness. I am here to help you, to help this community. I have a vision for the Westside to be the healthiest community in Canada, that people from other communities will come here to see exactly what it is we’re doing to be so healthy and they will be so inspired that they take home all the lessons they’ve learned from us and help their community achieve the same success we’ve been able to create here. I can’t achieve my vision without you. You have to want it too. So if you want your children to live long healthy lives, be the change you want to see in them.

Back to School
It’s getting to be that time of year when we all start thinking about getting back into a schedule and a routine.
The kids will be in school, our teachers and school support workers will be back to work, and the rest of us have that old feeling of summer coming to an end and the need to begin something new.
For us it’s a different workout routine, what is it for you?
If you’re not already getting adjusted, it’s a great way to add improved health, vitality and energy to your day!

In 1982, Mother Theresa was asked to come and helprebuild a children’s hospital and orphanage in warstricken Beirut.
After convincing the Israeli army and Palestinian guerillas to temporarily cease fire, she agreed. When her plane arrived, the heads of government and thousands of people showed up to see her and her
entourage begin their mission. They had expected Mother Theresa to bring an army of volunteers, equipment and supplies to rebuild the war ravaged area. They hadorganized dozens of vehicles and security personnel to escort Mother Theresa and her crew to the hospital Instead, to everyone’s surprise, she walked off the plane alone. She met the heads of government, and immediately asked them to bring her to the site where the children were being kept. When she arrived, 37 wounded and mentally handicapped children lay in a tent near the ruins of their former orphanage and hospital.
With a crowd of hundreds looking on, Mother Theresa ran up to one of the children, held it in her arms, and began praying and rocking the child back and forth. After 10 minutes, a woman ran up to Mother Theresa and, weeping, told her that she would bring the child into her family and raise it as her own. Mother Theresa then ran to the next child, and did the same thing. Within an hour and a half, ALL the children had been adopted into loving homes. She had done what she went there to do. She was driven back to the airport, and within 3 hours of her arrival, she departed, having rebuilt that community.
We all know Mother Theresa for being a woman who was on a mission. What we need to
understand is that she WAS the mission. She lived by being an example for us all. Gandhi once
said that we need to “be the change we wish to see in the world.”
We are ALL designed for greatness. If you want a better community, the most powerful thing you
can do is to be a better you. If you want a healthier family then be a healthier you.
We live in a community where far too many people are living sick and wounded lives, dying well
before their time. What’s an even greater tragedy is that while they are still alive, they’re not really
fully living! They are not getting to fulfill their vision for their lives.
We can change that! We can start by BEING THE MISSION. Together, we will lead this community,
and our greater human community, to an amazing life for all. It’s simple, but not always easy. We’re
here to act as your chiropractor, encourager, supporter and coach. We are ready and willing to do
whatever it takes to make this community “amazing”. Remember, good is the enemy of great. We
were designed for so much more. Let’s go out and live it. You’re worth it!
When you come in for your life-enhancing, specific, scientific chiropractic adjustment, you are
allowing your full potential to start shining through. You are allowed to express all the power that is
inside you, so that you can fulfill the vision for your life. That’s why we’re here: to make sure that
you can be person you were called to be, uninterrupted. It’s far more than helping you feel better.
It’s about BEING better, for your sake, for your family’s sake, for our community’s sake and for
humanity’s sake.

Summer is here!
No more teachers, no more books, and no more schedules. Summer is a great time here in the Okanagan, a time where we get to bask in the glory of the valley, take in the sights and entertain all the company that comes to visit.
It’s not a time where we are all that conscious of stress, getting sick, or having to worry about too much other than what we’re going to do this weekend or how we’re going to spend our holidays.
Unfortunately colds, flus, sunburn, food poisoning and heat stroke don’t take a vacation, and air quality in these parts can be pretty bad when the summer fire season is upon us. This month’s article is about getting, and staying healthy throughout the summer months and it’s going to be a short article – because staying healthy is easy.
All you need to do is eat well, take a high quality supplement to fill in any gaps in your diet, exercise regularly, get a good night’s sleep, maintain a positive mental attitude and have a properly functioning nervous system. If you’re having a hard time getting any one of those elements into your regular routine, there are many resources for you to take advantage of including Nutritionists, Personal Trainers, Chiropractors, Counselors and Naturopaths.
If you have those six elements as part of your daily routine, maintaining your great health is a cinch!
Now back to that summer sickness stuff. The warm weather, and poor air quality makes for challenges when you’re getting outside for your daily exercise. Of course you can always head indoors for your workouts, to your local gym or to your home exercise equipment, or you can consider getting up early or scheduling your workout later in the evening when the temperatures cool down. My personal favourite in the summer is to take my workout to the lake and swim! By making these easy changes, you can avoid breathing difficulties, dehydration and heat stroke or exhaustion.
Now that we’ve got your summer workout sick-proofed, we’re going to address your summer diet. Picnic season brings with it potato salad, shrimp cocktail and various other potential food poisoning hazards. The warm weather means that these foods are going to perish a little sooner so be careful about how long they’re not refrigerated, carry lots of ice packs and better yet, get a great cooler bag instead of that old wicker picnic basket.
Sunburn is a major concern of mine recently with the new recommendations of recent research that most sunscreen is more carcinogenic (cancer causing) than the effects of the sun itself. There are organic and non-chemical brands of sunscreen out there that are safe, so do your research when choosing the right one for your family. For those folks who have decided to forgo sunscreen entirely, cover up accordingly, seek the shade and limit your sun exposure to the morning and evening when possible.
Finally, the common cold and flu do not take time off. Even though it is not “flu season”, we still have to maintain good preventive practice to avoid getting and spreading illnesses. This means washing hands regularly with soap and water, cleaning often used surfaces with soap and water, coughing or sneezing into your sleeve not your hands and getting sufficient rest to allow your body to not be run down and susceptible to getting sick.
Maintaining a healthy immune system is crucial to avoiding getting sick and fighting off those illnesses if you do get them. If you find that you get sick a lot more than someone else you know, ask them if they’re sleeping, eating, exercising, thinking positive thoughts and getting adjusted by a chiropractor. You won’t be surprised to find out that they are.

Your Body Is Smarter Than You
Our profession is known for its natural approach to health. We always promote a drug free non-invasive method to achieving wellness. Believe it or not, that’s a difficult line to tow these days. The natural human tendency when we’re in pain is to want to stop that pain, and with pharmaceutical advancements we are able to do that with just about every form of illness – quickly. Even with many years of natural health training and teaching when we both got a touch of food poisoning this past weekend, we wouldn’t have wished it on anyone and would have done anything to make it go away. Suddenly taking a Gravol or Pepto Bismol didn’t sound so bad.
We were both able to resist the temptation and the pharmaceutical norm and we’re both still here to tell the story. Really all it took was listening to our own advice, the advice that we give our patients all the time; that your body is smarter than you! The truth of it is that taking an anti-emetic (stop throwing up medicine), can actually put your body at greater risk for bigger trouble down the road. Your very smart body has recognized a poison in your system and is doing it’s best to get rid of it. If you stupidly (as in not as smart as your body) try to stop that from happening, the toxin can stay there for longer causing further damage to you and your poor digestive system. Not to mention the toxic effects of putting a foreign chemical substance in your very intelligent body that it is unable to recognize and has difficulty processing.
Your body is smarter than you, it knows what to do, so just let it!
We were watching an old episode of Two And A Half Men last night and for those of you who have seen the show know that one of the main characters is a chiropractor. In last night’s episode Alan the chiropractor had a headache and his son Jake suggested he take an aspirin. Upon being told that Alan didn’t believe in pills because they were artificial chemical compounds foreign to the body, Jake responded that pills must be safe because he sees them on TV all the time and TV wouldn’t lie.
It seems a little crazy when you see that mentality in print, but next time you’re sitting down to watch your favourite show, take a count of how many drug commercials you see. From Advil to Tylenol and anti-depressants and cholesterol lowering agents, you are guaranteed to see not one, not two, but many every half hour. It’s astonishing really and it has become so normal that we don’t even notice it. Is it any wonder that when we think of illness that our next thought is of the corresponding drug to treat it?
Challenge yourself for the next week to recognize drug advertising and acknowledge that is in fact what it is – selling a product, not the honest truth. The next part of the challenge is to listen to your smart body. When you get a headache it’s definitely not because of an Advil deficiency, figure out what is causing that headache and make some natural changes. Maybe you didn’t get enough sleep last night, or maybe you’re dehydrated, perhaps you’re stressed. Get to the root of your problem to make it go away for good instead of having a pill tell your smart body to be quiet when it’s screaming at you that something is wrong.
